What a treat it was to visit Europe`s biggest film studio in Rome, Cinecittà Studios. This 20 soundstage facility was originally built in 1937 by the Mussolini regime and is the centre of Italian cinema. This studio has been home over the years to many films, 8 1/2, Ben Hur, Cleopatra and Gangs of New York and directors including Fellini, Rossellini, Coppola and Scorsese. The backlot area includes a full Roman town which was built for HBO`s Rome in 2004. Cleopatra (1963) has a particular fascination for me as it was a troubled production that had to be moved from the UK to Cinecittà for Elisabeth Taylor`s pneumonia recovery. The film cost $44 million dollars to make, over $300 today, and set 20th Century Fox on the edge of bankruptcy only to be averted by Fox selling off its substantial Los Angeles backlot to developers which is now Century City. The Cinecittà studio is once again back in the hands of the Italian state after years of being privately run. The studio is having a renaissance with plans to renovate all the 20 sound stages and to build 5 more. Cinecittà is part of our shared cinema history and it will be for many years to come. #workingstudio
